Rainy season is not only the best season to go out and explore the nature, but also, it’s the time when people sustain most of their injuries due to slips and falls. These are the things one can do to prevent all this.
- Be practical about what sport to choose or what place to visit on a rainy day. It is often the most important step in planning. One should choose a sport or travel destination according to his age and other comorbidities. Yes, groups and friends are important bit not more important than your health. Don’t just follow your younger friends or colleagues on a rough terrain on rainy days for fun if you are more prone for injuring yourself.
- Choose your footwears properly: Choose your footwear properly. A scientific assessment of your foot and shoes type is vital and can prevent devastating injuries. It is as important to spend on good quality shoes as on your clothing.
- Choose proper clothing: Usual fancy shorts, T- shirts may not be ideal for every outing. In places where you can have strong winds and cold weather or thunderstorms, it’s very important to keep yourself warm. Heat and energy conservation are vital in all these situations.
- Prepare well: while going for hikes always be prepared with ropes, non-slippery shoes, first -aid kits, torches, crepe bandages, mobile phones.
What to do if you have an injury?
First thing is don’t panic. Anxiety and adrenalin rush are of no help. Take a deep breath and asses your situation. Call for help if its possible. Check for any active bleeds and wounds. If the wounds are not deep, wash them with clean water. If you active bleeding, apply a tight pressure proximal to the bleeding area and on the wound, which will help reducing the bleed. Maintain the pressure. Always remember, wounds on the scalp bleed more and one has to maintain persistent pressure to reduce the blood loss. If you think you have any bony injury, ask your colleagues to help you splint your extremity with the help of a stick or firm support. If you have a soft tissue injury, you can just get away with the elastocrep bandage that you are carrying.
If you think you have any injury to the spine, DON’T move. Try and be steady. Call for help either by shouting or using a mobile phone. Let your colleagues help you.
Go to the nearest clinic or hospital for primary or definitive care.
Remember, any outdoor activity; may it be sport or activities like hiking, requires proper training and preparation. Those who fail to prepare are preparing for failing.
